Neuropathy is a painful and common condition that affects thousands of people every day. It occurs when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged, usually as a result of traumatic injuries, infections, metabolic disorders, and exposure to toxins. Neuropathy usually causes pain and numbness in the hands and feet that is often described as a shooting, tingling or burning sensation. There is no specific length of time that the pain exists, but with treatment, symptoms can improve over time – especially if the neuropathy has an underlying condition that can be cured. Sometimes the condition is associated with poor nutrition, a number of diseases, and pressure or trauma, but many cases have no known reason (called idiopathic neuropathy).
